A large tannery in the Western Cape was looking to purify a significant volume of tertiary treated municipal effluent for reuse in their facilities. Water testing was the first step in helping us determine the specs of the water treatment plant we were to design for them.
We commenced with the project by performing a comprehensive analysis of the water source. Our first point of reference was historical data of the water provided by the client. This aided us in determining the main concerns regarding water quality.
Thereafter we obtained samples of the water from the source and did our general water quality tests, measuring parameters such as pH, iron, manganese, and hardness as well as physical parameters such as turbidity, suspended solids and colour.
Jar testing was done to determine the type of pre-treatment required to process the water. These tests incorporated oxidation, coagulation, and lab filtration.
The Silt Density Index (SDI) was calculated for pre-treated and filtered samples to aid us in estimating the particle fouling rate of the equipment.
Upon completion of the water tests, we continued our analysis by comparing the historical data with our latest water test results.
The main factor we had to take into consideration was the anticipated fluctuation in the raw water quality.
This fluctuation can be addressed by implementing a conservative system design and treatment strategy that will allow the system to deal with variations in water quality. Water quality monitoring is key in a process of this nature.
